Classes are based on the syllabus followed by
Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay Nigam.
There are classes for each level.
Classes are separate for practical and
theoretical lessons in each levels.

Syllabus
Level- 1: Prarambhik
Total Marks: 50 | Practical: 40 | Theory: 10
Pass: 17 | Third: 17-20 | Second: 21-29
First : 30-40 | Distinction: 41+
PRACTICAL
- Introduction of Teentaal
- Tatkaar / footwork in Teentaal – Thah (slow speed) And Dugun (double
speed) - Ability to recite & perform 10 simple Todas and 4 Chakradaar Todas and two
Tihais in Teentaal - Recite Teentaal Theka on hands
- Recite Thah, Dugun and Chaugun of Teentaal Theka on hands.
THEORY - Ability to define Laya, Vilambit Laya, Madhya Laya, Drut Laya, Matra, Sam, Taal,
Khali and Vibhaag.
Level – 2: Praveshika Pratham
Total Marks: 75 | Theory: 15 | Practical: 60
Pass: 25 | Third: 25-37 | Second: 38-44
First: 45-50 | Distinction: 51+
PRACTICAL
- In Teental perform: One Rangmanch Pranam, Two Thaat, One Simple Aamad,
Six simple Todas, Two Chakradar Todas, Two Paran - Three Gat Nikas: Simple, Matki, and Bansuri.
- Tatkar: Thah, Dugun, Chaugun and at least 4 variations of Baant.
- Recitation of:
i. Teental Theka and its Thah, Dugun and Chaugun
ii. Ability to recite all the Todas on hand with Theka.
iii. Ability to recite Theka of Dadra and Keharwa Taal. - Ability to perform one dance in Dadra or Keharwa taal (While having knowledge
of the meaning and lyrics).
THEORY - All previous theory.
- Define Gat Nikas, Gat Palta, Tatkar, Toda, Thaat, Salaami / Rang Manch Pranaam,
Baant and Tukda. - Identify the symbols of Taal notations.
- Information and thekas of Dadra and Kerawa Taal.
- Names of five Kathak Guru of current time.
- Names & usages of 10 Asamyukta hasta Mudras as per Abhinay Darpan:
Pataka, Tri-Pataka, Ardha Pataka, Kartarimukh, Mayur, Ardhachandra, Araal,
Shukatunda, Mushthi, Shikhar.
Level-3: Praveshika Poorna
Total Marks: 125 | Theory: 50 | Practical: 60
Pass: 44 | Pass Marks for Theory: 16
Pass Marks for Practical: 28
THEORY
- All previous theory.
- Brief history of Kathak dance. (At least 10 to 15 sentences)
- Define: Aamad, Toda, Tukda, Tatkar, Paran, Chakradar, Kavit, Tihai,
Anga, Pratyanga, Upanga, Gat-Bhav, Hasta-Mudra - Define Folk Dance. And the names of any five Indian folk dances.
- Names of all seven Indian classical dance styles and their states.
- Asanyukta Hasta Mudra- Definition and usages of :
Pataka, Tri-pataka, Ardha-pataka, Kartari-mukha, Mayura,
Ardhachandra, Araala, Shukatunda, Mushthi, Shikhara, Kapittha,
Katakamukha, Suchi, Chandrakala, Padmakosha, Sarpasheersha, Mrugasheersha,
Simhamukha, Kaangula, Alapadma, Chatur, Bhramar, Hansasya, Hans-pakshya,
Sandausha, Mukula, Tamrachuda, Vyaghra, Trishul. - Life story of a renowned Kathak dancer.
- Names of well-known Tabla player who accompany Kathak at present.
- Ability to write the notations of:
In Teentaal: One Tihai, One simple Aamad, One paranjudi Aamad, One Toda, One
Paran and One Kavit
In Jhaptaal: Thah, dugun of Theka ending with Tihai, One Toda, One Aamad, One
Paran. - Write notations of Thekas of Dadra and Keharwa Taal
PRACTICAL - In Teentaal: Two Thaat, One ParanjudiAamad, One Rangamanch Pranam, Four
simple Todas (Different than 1st year Todas, each toda should be made of atleast
3 avartans), Two Paran, Four Chakradaar Paran, One Kavit, One Chakradar Tihai. - In Tatkar:
i. Adhi, Barabar, Dugun, Chaugun, Athgun ending with Tihai.
ii. Tatkar Baant ending with proper tihai in Teentaal. - Gat-Nikas: Mor-Mukut, Ghunghat, Bansuri.
- Gat-Bhav: Panihari
- Story line of Gat Bhav: Radha goes to the river bank to fetch water. Krishna
comes, breaks her pot, Radha is annoyed, Krishna laughs etc. - Ability to show all Hasta-Mudras used in Gat-Bhav.
- Ability to recite all the Todas and Bol on hands.
- In Jhaptaal: One Thaat, One Aamad, One Tihai, Two Todas, One Chakradaar Toda,
One Paran.
Level 4: Madhyama Pratham
Total Marks: 200 | Theory: 75 | Practical: 125
Pass: 70 | Pass Marks for Theory: 26

THEORY
- Knowledge of all the definitions from all past levels.
- Nartan variations: Nritya, Natya and Nritt.
- Definition of Lasya and Tandav dance forms.
- As per Abhinay Darpan: Greeva BHed (4 variations)
- As per Abhinay Darpan: Shirobhed (9 variations)
- Definitions of Folk dances and modern dances.
- Biography: Pandit Kalika Prasad, Pandit Bindadin Maharaj, Pandit Harihar
Prasad, Pandit Hanuman Prasad. - Specialities of Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas.
- As per Abhinay Darpan, definition and usage of:
Anjali, Kapot, Karkat, Swastik, Dhola, Pushput, Utsang, Shivling, Katakavardhana,
Kartariswastikah, Shakat, Shankh. - Ability to write all compositions of Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal , in Bhatkhande
notations. - Ability to narrate/write the story of Gat-bhav.
- Introduction of Sant Kavi Soor Das and Mira Bai.
PRACTICAL - In Teentaal:

Exams
Exams are conducted once a year for eligible students.
Exams are conducted in the Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay Nigam centers in Hyderabad.
Forms are distributed 4 months prior to the exam.
Exams includes both theory and practical.
